Pot Belly Pigs

In Loving Memory - Madonna

There is nothing so sad to wake up and see our beloved turkey killed.  I live with regret as I didn't put her away that night as she seem so content on the top of the shavings pile. I know it was just a turkey but this turkey was a grea companion while I did my daily chores. She was underfoot more times than not and waiting for someone to come and see her at the gate - she is missed.

Three Little Pigs

When most people arrive at our place the first thing that they say  is "OH, my gosh - you have pigs!"  Then they laugh and this is perfectly normal reaction, even by those of us that see them all the time!

Thelma (below) is the one that started off the madness.

(Thelma and Oliver)

Everyone loves Thelma, especially my husband.  "Don't bug my pig," he says.  "You can do whatever you want to anyone else but leave my pig alone."  I was convinced that Thelma needed a friend so along came Daphne...then Delilah because Daphne was pregnant. And the story goes that of course, we needed to keep one of Daphne's babies. They are a hysterically funny animal, guaranteed to make you laughing from the moment you first meet them.

I tell everyone that pigs are truly pigs.  There is no getting around that, as my friend Cheryl will agree after a weekend looking after our place.  We feed our pigs a hog grower, a small amount of it three times a day. When I arrived home from our weekend, I look at my pigs and was amazed the 10 pounds they gained over the weekend?! And I discovered the new 20 kg bag of feed just purchased was almost empty - normally expected to last several weeks. Yup, Cheryl admits she overfed the pigs in 2 days! They acted hungry to Cheryl kept feeding them! Happy, fat pigs...for 2 days!

Chickens, Chickens and MORE Chickens

Having our chickens has been a love-hate situation and anyone that has them will understand where I am coming from.  It started out as a great way the kids can earn some money but just as any good plan, it can back fire.

Kids combined with chickens can bring struggles few can imagine yet we manage to find success. The kids have earned money from the egg sales and from selling their odd chickens; they have entered them in the local fair and have won a good amount of money & prizes for the odd collection of chickens that we bring.

In 2007, we won the Rooster Crowing Champion and in 2008 we were the Runner Up.  In 2008, we had one of our White Crested Polish Chickens in Champion row!   We can't wait to see what happens for 2009 - look for us at the Armstrong I.P.E.

Our layers are a Plymouth Barred Rock and Americans. From time to time we sell some our chickens, contact us if interested!
